Currently, I live in the last home my grandparents purchased & the last one they lived in…Grandpa lived here til he passed away in 2004 & Grandma lived here until she had to go in the nursing home in June of 2010.
I walked towards the kitchen tonight & happened to pause to look at Grandpa’s desk.
Not much has changed since Grandpa last sat at his desk. In fact, the calendar is still there from 2004. No one really uses it…I don’t think we really want to disturb anything. The photo on the left is my uncle & the photo on the right is my mom.
I can still see grandpa sitting there as he paid bills, balanced the checkbook, and planned his grocery lists. I can also see him sitting there as he checked his sugar levels & then gave himself the insulin shots that were necessary to control the disease of diabetes.
This desk carries the history of my grandparents. Warranties, owner’s manuals, & receipts are some of the things that are in the drawers. These don’t mean much to anyone else but they represent the careful thought & looking that went into making a purchase for their home.
Someday in the future, mom & my uncle will have to go through the desk & decide what to keep & what to throw away. But for now, it’s still Grandpa’s desk.
